VF-J4 Short Scale 32,5"

F-bass is a Canadian brand that was founded by George Furlanetto in 1978.

Over the years, these basses have been moulded into a perfect combination of classic sound and modern comfort. George continues to improve his basses through deep research and sparring with some of the best bass players in the world.

This VF-4 is a custom short-scale build at 32,5”, but it doesn’t behave like the usual “small bass.” The feel is easy under the left hand, the tension sits just right, and the notes speak instantly. There’s a fast response to the touch but the tone has real weight behind it.

This body is made out of Mahogany wings which brings a warm, rounded low-mid presence and an Ash center block that gives clarity, punch, and string definition.

So you get the body and fullness you want from mahogany, but with the snap and articulation that ash gives.

It’s the kind of bass where you don’t have to dig in hard to get the note to pop out. It just talks.

The VF-PJ4 is the embodiment of the sound of the 60’ and 70’, but still very powerful, clean and organic.

The Preamp is the F-bass preamp with Volume/Volume, Tone and the all boost three-band EQ.

The body of the VF-J4 features Mahogany wings and an Ash center block. Mahogany is known for its rich low mids, while Ash complements it with a clean tone and a more neutral, almost scooped midrange. The glued joints of the three-piece body also contribute to its compression, resulting in a powerful, thick punchy tone. This tone is well-controlled in the low end and boasts excellent overall clarity.

The VF-J4 Comes with Aguilar’s J-HC pickups. These are for the players who love the classic Jazz Bass feel, but don’t love the 60-cycle hum that sometimes follows you around on stage or in the studio. This set keeps the open, woody top-end, the mid punch, and the quick attack that makes a good J-bass feel alive — just without the noise.

Some of hum-canceling designs tend to go a bit stiff or compressed. Aguilar has managed to avoid that. These sit right in the sweet spot: still responsive to your right-hand dynamics, still breathing in the high mids, still letting the wood speak.

Fret Size
The frets are Nickel and are wide, medium height, with a flattened pyramid shape. Nickel preferred over steel as it has a slightly sweeter tone and the medium profile ensures you’re hearing more of the fingerboard while also not pushing the note out of tune…like some taller fretwire.
Neck Construction
1 piece flat-sawn Maple
Neck Carve
Modern shape….slightly thin to medium with an asymmetrical carve where the treble side carve is a little more aggressive from the centre of the neck to the fingerboard edge. This makes for a faster feel while still keeping thick enough for comfort to avoid premature hand cramping
