VF-PJ4
The F Bass VF-PJ4 is a stunning embodiment of old-school soul wrapped in modern finesse. At first glance, it carries that classic P-meets-J silhouette, but once you lay your hands on it, it reveals layers of thoughtful design and tone-shaping wizardry that are unmistakably F Bass.
This particular version sports a solid ash body, which already sets the tone—literally—for what to expect. Ash has this special way of bringing out brightness and midrange clarity without sacrificing low-end depth. The result is a punchy, articulate bass with a tight low end and a snappy high-mid bite, making it ideal for players who want their lines to cut through clean and confident.
Paired with Aguilar’sPJ pickup configuration, this bass gives you the best of both worlds. The P-style pickup at the neck delivers that full-bodied, thumpy character that hugs the mix with warmth. Switch to the J-style bridge pickup and you’re met with growl, definition, and a bit of attitude—perfect for fingerstyle, or anything where articulation is key. Blend the two, and you’re walking into an incredibly flexible tonal space. It can do Motown fat and Jaco bark in the same set.
The neck profile is slim and comfortable—fast without feeling too modern—and the fingerboard edges are subtly rolled, making it feel played-in from the first touch. Whether you’re laying down pocket grooves or stretching into upper-register solos, the VFPJ4 responds with effortless clarity and smooth playability.
And of course, being an F Bass, the craftsmanship is second to none. Every fret is level, every contour is purposeful, and the finish feels luxurious without being flashy. The passive electronics are simple but incredibly well-voiced, so you don’t need a preamp to sound massive—just plug in and go.
All in all, the VFPJ4 with an ash body is that rare kind of bass that honors tradition while giving players a modern edge. It’s the kind of bass that doesn’t need to shout to be heard—it just sings.

The F Bass preamp is set up with the all-boost 3-band EQ, what you’re getting is a cleverly voiced active preamp where each EQ band—bass, mid, and treble—only boosts frequencies rather than cutting them. That might sound limiting at first, but it’s actually genius in execution. The voicing is so spot-on that you don’t miss the cut option. The bass boost fattens up your low end without getting woofy, perfect for adding girth in a live mix. The midrange boost gives your tone punch and presence—it’s where the growl lives—and the treble boost adds just the right amount of sparkle and string articulation.
Since it’s all-boost, it encourages you to start with the flat sound of the pickups and then build your tone up, rather than shaving things away. It’s intuitive and player-focused, and paired with the dynamic response of the ash body, it’s ridiculously satisfying to tweak on the fly.
The Volume, Volume, Tone (VVT) setup, it’s all about simplicity and vintage control. One volume knob for each pickup gives you fine-tuned blending between that fat P-neck sound and the snappy J-bridge, while the passive tone knob rolls off highs as needed—great for warming up your sound or dialing in a classic muted thump.
Both setups give you versatility, but the vibe shifts. The active version is more hi-fi and modern-flexible, while the passive VVT is raw, honest, and rooted in vintage feel.

- The frets are Nickel and are wide, medium height, with a flattened pyramid shape. Nickel preferred over steel as it has a slightly sweeter tone and the medium profile ensures you’re hearing more of the fingerboard while also not pushing the note out of tune…like some taller fretwire.
- Neck Construction
- 1 piece flat-sawn Maple
- Neck Carve
- Modern shape….slightly thin to medium with an asymmetrical carve where the treble side carve is a little more aggressive from the centre of the neck to the fingerboard edge. This makes for a faster feel while still keeping thick enough for comfort to avoid premature hand cramping
