Wal Custom Mark I — Wenge, 1981

There are a handful of basses that session players and collectors chase for decades, and the Wal Custom sits near the top of that list. Built by hand at Electric Wood in High Wycombe, a Wal earned its reputation on record after record through the 1980s — and this one comes from the very beginning of that story.

Serial P.B.1841 places it in 1981, right at the crossover from Wal’s Pro series to the Custom series that would go on to define the brand. A small run of these early Custom-spec basses shipped still carrying Pro Bass serial numbers before the switch to W-numbers — so what you’re looking at is a fully-fledged Custom Mark I wearing a piece of Wal’s transitional history on its control cavity.

Body, Neck & Woods

The body is Wal’s signature construction — a mahogany core faced with wenge. Wenge is one of the darkest, densest facing woods Wal ever offered, and it’s the one many players reach for when they want the hardest, most focused version of the Wal voice: tight lows, aggressive mids and a real snap on top.

The neck is Wal’s multi-laminate design — maple run through with contrasting hardwood laminates for the kind of dead-straight stability these instruments are known for. It carries a rosewood fingerboard over the classic 21-fret, 34-inch-scale Mark I layout.

It’s been professionally refretted, so the playing surface up top is effectively new — a genuine plus on a 44-year-old instrument. This is a bass that’s been looked after and set up to play, not a museum piece behind glass.

Condition

This is an honest, played 1981 instrument, and we describe it as exactly that. The back carries plenty of belt and buckle wear from decades of stage and studio use — cosmetic marks that come with a bass that’s actually been gigged rather than left in a case.

The frets are new: it’s been professionally refretted, so playability up the neck is fresh. New straplocks have been fitted, and it ships in its original Wal hard case.

As with any vintage instrument, we’d point it at a player who wants a real, gigged Wal with character over a mint collector piece. Come and try it, or ask us anything before you buy.

Electronics, Sound & Feel

Under the hood sit two Wal humbucking pickups, each built from four individual string-matched coils to cancel hum and keep every string even and articulate. This is the pickup design that gives a Wal its uncanny clarity — you hear the note and the wood, not just a thick lump of low end.

The active Wal preamp is the other half of the magic. Instead of a normal bass/mid/treble stack it uses Wal’s filter-based EQ with push/pull pick-attack switches, letting you sweep from deep and round to biting and vocal without ever sounding processed. It’s the circuit behind some of the most recognisable bass tones of the last four decades.

This is a serious instrument for a serious player — a genuine early Wal Custom, not a reissue or a tribute. And with the wenge facing giving it the most focused version of the Wal sound, this is where the conversation starts. Sold on behalf of its owner, in its original Wal case.
