The master volume control is closest to the neck pickup (graduated 0 – 10). When pulled out (‘up’ position) it boosts selected high frequencies, adding to the overall tone setting you have selected – we call this the ‘pick attack’. This creates a percussive ‘edge’ to the sound, most noticeable when the tone controls are rolled back, and adds transparency.
The pan / blend control is nearest the bridge pickup. In the ‘T’ position, the output from the treble / bridge pickup is heard and in the ‘B’ position, the output from the bass / neck pickup. The centre detent gives an equal blend of both pickups.
There are two tone controls, one assigned to each pickup (the neck pickup tone is positioned towards the neck and bridge pickup control nearer the bridge).
The action of the tone controls is in the regular (pushed in) position it will roll off frequencies (i.e. less treble) as it is turned anti-clockwise. When in the pulled out (‘up’ position), it will boost those frequencies at the roll-off point you have selected.
The Wal control configuration thus allows you to select different frequencies on either pickup and then mix between them using the pan control. In this way the pan control effectively becomes an additional master tone control.
There are endless combinations of sounds to explore and experiment with but many players like to keep it simple with both tones fully on (set to 10) and pushed in, and the pan control in the central position (even output from both pickups) for a full and balanced sound.
If you want to experiment with the boost features of the tone controls (pulled out), a good starting point is to set the neck tone on 6 and the bridge tone on 7 with the balance in the middle. From here make fine adjustments (between 5 and 7) to hear the subtle effect they have.
Standard jack output is for amp feed. Insertion into this socket switches on the electronics. XLR output for balanced DI transformer isolation providing clean reliable and safe studio or stage mixer feed without the need for an external DI box. Please note that a dummy or unconnected jack plug MUST be inserted when using the DI output alone.
Trim pot 1 (neck/bridge pickup) cuts low bass frequencies when rotated clockwise. Especially relevant with 5 string basses with low B string. Standard setting = 100% (anticlockwise).
Trim pot 2: pick attack level, increased by anticlockwise rotation. Standard setting = 50%.
Trim pot 3: master volume level. Standard setting = 100% (anticlockwise). Reduce appropriately by turning clockwise if encountering mixer overload, in order to match output to other instruments.
