Wal MK1 Fretless — 1986, English Ash

Some basses have a sound. The Wal has a signature. From Percy Jones’ liquid runs to Mick Karn’s vocal, keening fretless lines, the Wal fretless defined an entire school of playing — and this 1986 MK1 is the real thing, hand-built at Electric Wood in High Wycombe by Ian Waller and Pete “the Fish” Stevens.

This one pairs a warm mahogany core with a facing of English Ash and a lined ebony fingerboard, later lacquered for a harder, glassier surface. It’s in excellent condition, and it comes in its original Wal hardcase.

Body, Neck & Woods

The MK1 body is a laminated sandwich — a mahogany core faced with a top of English Ash. That combination is the heart of the Wal voice: the mahogany brings warmth, weight and a dense low end, while the ash facing adds definition and a touch of air up top. It’s an offset-waist, twin-cutaway shape with belly and forearm contours, so despite the dense woods it balances and sits against you properly.

The neck is a bolt-on, multi-laminate build in hard-rock maple with hornbeam centre strips — the classic Wal recipe that gives these necks their stability and their tight, focused fundamental. The fingerboard is ebony, and here it’s a lined fretless: you get position markers where the frets would be, so intonation is far more forgiving than on an unlined board without giving up any of the fretless feel.

The ebony board has been lacquered after the fact, and it transforms the fretless voice. A hard, glassy coat over already-dense ebony reflects more of the string’s energy back, so you get more sustain, more mwah and a stronger, more vocal growl — and it lets you run roundwounds without chewing up the wood. It’s a 34-inch scale with a 42mm nut, so it plays like a familiar four-string, just with that unmistakable Wal geometry under your hands.

Condition

This MK1 is in excellent condition throughout. The finish presents beautifully, the neck is straight, and the electronics — pickups, both filters and the balanced DI — are all working as they should. It’s an honest, very well-kept example of a nearly forty-year-old instrument.

The one departure from original spec is the fingerboard, which a previous owner had lacquered — a common and genuinely desirable modification on a fretless, and one that improves both durability and tone (see above). Otherwise it’s all original, and it ships in its original Wal hardcase.

Electronics, Sound & Feel

Wal’s pickups are the secret. Each of the two humbuckers contains a separate coil for every string — eight coils in total — so the output is perfectly balanced string-to-string, dead quiet, and unusually flat and full in its response. There’s no scooped hi-fi hype here; it’s a huge, even, honest signal that the preamp then goes to work on.

And that preamp is why people fall for Wals. Instead of a normal bass/treble stack you get two sweepable low-pass filters — one per pickup — each with a pull-switch that adds a resonant peak as it rolls off. Blend the pickups with the pan control, dial the filters, and you move from deep and round to that famous nasal, vocal fretless quack with a flick of the wrist. The master volume pulls for pick-attack — a burst of percussive high-end bite — and there’s a balanced XLR DI on board so you can run straight to the desk. All of it on a single 9V battery.

On a fretless, this package is spectacular. The multicoil pickups and lacquered ebony board give you sustain and clarity for days, and the filters let you place that mwah exactly where you want it — subtle and woody, or wide-open and singing. If you’ve wanted a real Wal fretless, this is one of the good ones: excellent condition, original case, ready to record. This is where the fretless conversation starts and ends.
