Mantle Analog Bass Preamp // D.I.

The Mantle is one of those pieces that instantly makes your bass feel more “finished” the moment you plug in. It’s a premium preamp and DI, developed with Ian Martin Allison, built for players who care about what actually comes out of the speakers—whether that’s on stage, in the studio, or straight into an interface at home.

At its core, this thing is all about feel and authority. The custom “Sapphire” transformers bring a weight and push in the low end and low mids that leans into that classic Neve-style thickness, while the top end stays open and articulate in a way that feels closer to API. The result isn’t hyped—it just sounds like your bass, but more solid, more present, and sitting exactly where you want it.

There’s a JFET input up front that keeps everything touch-sensitive and honest, and then you’ve got transformer gain that doesn’t just make things louder—it adds density, harmonic content, and that slightly “magnetic” feel under the fingers. It’s one of those rare circuits where you actually feel the difference as much as you hear it.

The EQ is where it gets really clever. Instead of a typical bass/treble setup, you’re working with a system that shifts character depending on how you use it. Boosting starts broad and musical, adding weight or air without getting messy. Cutting brings in high-pass and low-pass filtering at musical points, so you can clean up a mix or tighten your sound without it ever feeling clinical. It’s very much a “use your ears” design—everything lands in useful places.

Headroom is massive thanks to the internally boosted 24V power, so it stays clean and controlled even with hot active basses. And if you need it, there’s a pad switch to keep things in check. The transformer-balanced XLR out means whatever you’re plugging into next—FOH, studio desk, interface—gets a signal that already sounds like it belongs there.

Routing is simple and practical: straight in, straight out to your amp or board, plus a proper DI path that actually feels like a finished tone rather than an afterthought.

Under the hood, the signal path is clean and intentional—JFET buffer into filtering options, into transformer gain, into EQ, and then out through another transformer. Nothing unnecessary, nothing overcomplicated—just a well-voiced chain that keeps your bass intact while giving you control over how it sits.

This isn’t a “do everything” box. It’s a “do the important things properly” box. And that’s exactly why it works.

Bass & Treble (Boost/Cut Filter System)

The Mantle’s EQ is a sophisticated dual-behavior design, far more expressive than standard shelves. Both Bass and Treble controls feature eleven-position rotary switches for a satisfying studio feel, easily reproducible settings, and a true flat response at noon (position 6).

Boosting (positions 7–11):

    • Begins as a shelf, gradually transitioning into a broad, musical bell as you increase gain.
    • Each increment adds +3dB, up to +15dB, without drifting into muddiness or harshness.

Cutting (positions 5–1):

    • Introduces a steep -18dB/oct HPF on the Bass control at selectable points:
      30Hz, 50Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz
    • Introduces a steep -18dB/oct LPF on the Treble control at selectable points: 8kHz, 6kHz, 4kHz, 2kHz, 1kHz

This design allows precision mix shaping or broad musical coloration, without sacrificing elegance or fidelity.

Gain Control

The Gain control adjusts the amount of transformer-based gain applied to the signal. The gain circuit comes directly from the input transformer, creating magnetic manipulation at its finest. This control offers a gain range from -6dB to +23dB across the control range.

With the combination of the JFET buffer and transformer gain, the result is a tone that feels alive, dimensional, and deeply expressive.

Outputs

1/4" TS Unbalanced Input (Hi-Z):
Optimized for electric bass and buffered by a high-quality JFET stage to maintain impedance, detail, and instrument integrity.
1/4" TS Unbalanced Output
Send your shaped signal to an amp or additional pedals.
Male XLR Balanced Output
1/4” output
Pre/Post
Pre: Your signal goes to the D.I. XLR output before your Gain and EQ settings Post: Gain, EQ, and Master settings will be sent to the D.I. XLR output jack.

Switches

Active / Passive (-10dB Pad)
Engaged: Introduces a -10dB input pad, ideal for active basses or instruments with high-output preamps. Prevents overloading the input stage. Disengaged: Bypasses the pad for full-strength passive bass output and maximum sensitivity.

Ground Lift

Ground Lift
Engaged: Separates the XLR output ground from circuit ground. Purpose: Eliminates hum and ground-loop noise when connecting to unfamiliar or complex live/studio setups.

Power

External DC Power
9VDC, 500mA center-negative. Internally boosted to +24V for massive headroom and clean, authoritative bass response.
