Combustion Nashville-5 Vintage Burst

There is a lot of things that make Dingwall stand out compared to other bass companies. Their unique looks, lightweight build and super-fast neck are some of them, but their most unique quality is definitely their dedication to fanned frets.

Why do I need fanned frets you might ask?

Well, if you have played a 5 or 6 string bass you have probably noticed that the low B sounds more dull than the E string, and the high C will sound brighter and thinner than the G.

This is because they use the same scale length across the entire fretboard, when in reality, the B-string needs a longer scale length and the C-string should have a shorter scale length to sound its best. Dingwall’s fret design combats exactly this pitfall by varying the scale length across the fretboard, so every note will jump out at you with punch, warmth and a ton of clarity.

As a 5 string bass player myself, it’s a revolution for me, to be able to move freely around the fretboard and get a crisp, clear and defined note every single time.

The look and feel of the fanned frets only take a couple of hours to get used to. So, there is nothing to be afraid of here. Only massive tonal and creative gains to be made!

The Nashville Edition was born after Sheldon Dingwall’s trip to Music City, where he spent time at Grammy-winning Pentavarit Studios, playing and recording with some of Nashville’s finest. That energy and inspiration turned into a Combustion model with extra soul, a few smart upgrades, and a whole lot of versatility.

One of the biggest changes is the electronics. This bass comes loaded with a Rupert Neve Designs onboard preamp -yes, the same Neve that’s behind some of the most legendary studio gear ever made. It brings studio-grade clarity, warmth, and punch right into your hands. The EQ is simple but musical: bass control voiced low to keep things tight, treble voiced high to add air without harshness. Add in the master tone knob (works in both active and passive) and you’ve got a tool that can flip from vintage thump to modern snap in seconds—all without losing the character of your playing.

Dingwall has also swapped the traditional rotary pickup selector for a blend control, giving you precise tonal shaping. Flick the toggle up for a classic P-bass-style growl, down to engage the blend, or leave it in the middle to mix bridge and neck to taste.

Visually, the Nashville Edition stands out with a custom pickguard that nods to classic southern style. Under the hood, it’s pure Dingwall performance: a swamp ash body based on the Custom Shop Afterburner, compact, lightweight, and perfectly balanced. The five-piece maple neck, four-bolt joint, and multi-scale 34–37″ design give you a rock-solid low B and effortless playability across two full octaves.

The FD3n pickups, wound to Dingwall’s exact specs with neodymium magnets, deliver a smooth but aggressive tone that’s full of presence. The custom bridge design offers rock-solid stability and adjustable action thanks to Dingwall’s riser system, while lightweight tuners keep the balance spot-on.

Dingwall’s own strings—developed specifically for multi-scale instruments—come standard, in nickel or stainless steel. They give you even tension, warm highs, and a tight, authoritative low end that locks in beautifully with any drummer.

If you’re looking for a bass that blends Nashville’s character with Dingwall’s cutting-edge precision, this one’s ready to work hard—on stage, in the studio, and everywhere in between.
