Masterpiece is the top of Sandberg’s aging ladder, and this is the tier where one luthier in Braunschweig spends the better part of a week on a single bass. The finish is applied thin, then taken back off by hand exactly where a working bass loses it — the forearm, the lower bout, the back where a belt buckle lives, the edges your ribs rest against. Nothing here is a printed pattern or a bit of sanded-through paint at the strap button.

On a gold burst that work has a particular payoff. Gold metallic is one of the hardest finishes to age convincingly, because the flake sits so close to the surface — as it wears you get that copper-to-bare-wood transition down the whole treble side, with the dark burst edges still holding on at the horns. Add a black pickguard that has been scuffed dull, tuners and bridge with the plating rubbed off, and a maple board with a real playing patina worn into it, and you have a bass that looks like it has been out five nights a week since the eighties.

Sandberg's Masterpiece work is the only relic job we stock where the tone follows the looks — the thin finish and the heat and vibration treatment do as much as the sandpaper does.

The body is alder, heat and vibration treated before assembly — Sandberg’s way of compressing what decades of string energy and dry air do to a body into a controlled process. Alder is the most even-handed of the classic body woods to begin with: strong fundamental, warm lower mids, nothing spiky anywhere in the range. The treatment opens it up, taking some of the tightness out of the attack so notes bloom instead of just starting. Combined with a finish that is deliberately thinner than on a High Gloss bass, you feel the difference against your ribs before the amp is even involved.

The neck is canadian hard rock maple, bolted on with six bolts, and this one carries a maple fingerboard rather than the more common rosewood. That changes the voice: maple on maple is brighter, faster in the attack and more articulate in the upper mids, which keeps a five-string from smearing when the arrangement gets busy. The 22 frets sit over a 14″ radius, flat enough for low action and a light touch, and there is a zero fret at the top with a string guide behind it — so an open string rings with the same metal-on-metal character as a fretted one, and the action at the first position is set by fret height instead of nut slot depth.

Scale is 34″ with a 44.6 mm nut, which means this plays like a familiar five rather than a stretch — the B stays woody and vocal instead of piano-tight, exactly the voicing this platform is built around. Bridge spacing adjusts from 18 mm to 19.5 mm, so you set the string spacing to your right hand rather than adapting to the bass.

The VM layout is a reverse split-coil in the neck position and a Sandberg Power Humbucker at the bridge. Reversing the split-coil puts the poles for the low strings closer to the bridge, which tightens and focuses the bottom end — the difference between a low B that speaks and one that just rumbles. On its own it is the classic thick, mid-forward Precision voice, but with the ends of the notes cleaned up.

The bridge humbucker is the other half of the argument: loud, dense and aggressive, with the growl that sits on top of a distorted guitar without any help from the EQ. Blend the two and you land on the sound most people actually reach for — the split-coil’s weight underneath, the humbucker’s bite on top. The Sandberg 2-band preamp gives you boost and cut on bass and treble, and pulling the volume knob drops the whole thing into passive mode where the treble control becomes a real tone control, not a dead knob. If a battery quits mid-set, you lose the boost, not the gig.

This is the VM for players who want the aggressive end of the platform. The maple board pushes the attack forward, the thin Masterpiece finish and the treated alder keep the body open underneath it, and the split-coil-plus-humbucker pairing covers old-school weight, modern slap and rock grind without a pedal in between. And the best part of buying a Masterpiece: the first ding is already there. Someone in Braunschweig put it there for you, and did a much better job of it than you would.
