Mattisson: boutique basses from Sweden

Bass luthier Anders Mattisson builds Mattisson basses in Sweden. For more than a decade, Mattisson has delivered hand-built basses in the high end to players all over the world. Moreover, they build in small numbers and to their own recipe rather than to a market.

Mattisson and True Temperament

Anders Mattisson wanted to make a production series that was more affordable than his own Masterbuilt basses, but still with very high quality. Therefore, in 2023 he teamed up with True Temperament, and True Temperament builds the production series at their new factory in Trollhättan, Sweden.

The first model from that partnership was a signature 6-string for Henrik Linder: the Mattisson HL-6 with True Temperament frets. True Temperament frets are curved, and they’re there to make the bass play more in tune all the way up the neck.

The Mattisson bass models

The HL-6 is the Henrik Linder signature 6-string, with a 33″ scale and True Temperament frets. When we call a Mattisson Team Built, True Temperament has made it as a production bass. The Masterbuilt basses, on the other hand, Anders builds himself. In addition, he builds custom instruments, such as the Custom Series, and from time to time we also have pre-owned Series I and Series II basses in the shop.

For example, a Custom Series 5 we have had in the shop has a mahogany core with a figured ash top, a five-piece maple, padouk and wenge neck, and an ebony fingerboard with a zero fret. In other words, every part is a choice.
