Kyle Konkiel KK3 Matte Army Green Signature Limited

This one feels like a proper evolution—not just a facelift, but a rethink of what made the original Lamborghini-inspired Kyle Konkiel Signature model launched back in 2023 with a custom color-shift finish, Nordstrand EQ and an additional pickup configuration in the first place.

This new version pulls things back in a really tasteful way. The Matte Army Green gives it a more grounded, almost utilitarian look—but with a deeper story behind it. It’s personal. It’s intentional. And it suits the instrument in a way that feels less flashy and more timeless.

It’s still very much a modern Dingwall machine—but refined. You’re looking at an alder body paired with a 5-piece maple neck and a rosewood board, so there’s that familiar balance of punch, warmth, and clarity. Then you add Ralph Novak’s multi-scale system—34” to 37”—and everything just tightens up where it matters. The low B has real authority, while the top end stays fast and alive. It’s one of those builds where you don’t think about the ergonomics… it just works.

Limited to just 100 pieces, this isn’t just another signature model—it’s a very specific take on the Combustion platform which we like very much here at Bass Buddha

Electronics-wise, this is where it gets properly fun. Three FD3n pickups give you that signature Dingwall articulation—tight low end, clear mids, and a top that cuts without getting harsh. The addition of the EMG 3-band preamp adds a slightly more polished, controlled feel to the overall response, with plenty of headroom and precision when you start shaping things.

Then there’s the wiring. The Quad-tone rotary is already a powerful platform, but adding the toggle for the middle pickup opens it up in a big way. You’re effectively sitting on eight usable pickup combinations—and not in a gimmicky way. These are all tones you’d actually use. From focused, almost P-style punch to wide, modern hi-fi clarity, it’s all in there without feeling complicated

There is a lot of things that make Dingwall stand out compared to other bass companies. Their unique looks, lightweight build and super-fast neck are some of them, but their most unique quality is definitely their dedication to fanned frets.

Why do I need fanned frets you might ask?

Well, if you have played a 5 or 6 string bass you have probably noticed that the low B sounds more dull than the E string, and the high C will sound brighter and thinner than the G.

This is because they use the same scale length across the entire fretboard, when in reality, the B-string needs a longer scale length and the C-string should have a shorter scale length to sound its best. Dingwall’s fret design combats exactly this pitfall by varying the scale length across the fretboard, so every note will jump out at you with punch, warmth and a ton of clarity.

As a 5 string bass player myself, it’s a revolution for me, to be able to move freely around the fretboard and get a crisp, clear and defined note every single time.

The look and feel of the fanned frets only take a couple of hours to get used to. So, there is nothing to be afraid of here. Only massive tonal and creative gains to be made!
