Bacci Amrita Michael League Signature — Fretless
This is the fretless side of one of the most distinctive basses in the modern boutique world. The Amrita is Bruno Bacci’s collaboration with Michael League of Snarky Puppy — a Tuscan-built instrument limited to just 40 pieces, born from a multi-year search for a bass that, in League’s words, needed nothing changed. This one takes the same recipe and pulls the frets off, putting an ebony board under your fingers and a world of vocal, sliding expression into your hands.
What makes an Amrita an Amrita is the body: alder that’s been aged and bored through by woodworm. Bacci treats those tiny wormholes as natural tonal chambers — an apparently solid body that breathes like a semi-hollow. The result is light, airy, and resonant in a way a plain plank of alder simply isn’t.
Pull the frets off an Amrita and you get the best of both worlds — the airy, breathing resonance of that woodworm alder, and the vocal mwah of an ebony fretless board. This is a custom you don't see come up twice.
Body, Neck & Woods
The body is woodworm-aged alder, finished in thin nitrocellulose so the wood can move and vibrate freely. The wormholes left behind by the larvae act as tiny acoustic chambers throughout the body, lightening it and giving the Amrita its signature airy, percussive resonance — full and warm, but with an openness most solid-body basses can’t touch.
The neck is figured Balkan flame maple, bolt-on, finished in the same aged-tone nitro. Bacci’s build philosophy is all about locking the neck and body into frequency alignment, and you feel it as sustain — notes ring on with a richness that almost sounds like there’s a touch of natural reverb in the instrument itself.
The fingerboard is ebony, unlined and fretless. Ebony is dense and hard — it gives a fretless its bite and clarity, that glassy attack under the warmth, and it stands up to years of roundwound wear far better than softer boards. Against the warm, woody alder body, the ebony keeps the top end clear and detailed, so the mwah sings without turning to mud.
Condition
This Amrita is in near-mint condition — close to as it left Bruno Bacci’s bench. The nitrocellulose finish, the ebony board has a little string wear, the hardware and the electronics all present clean, with no notable wear to call out.
It ships in its original Bacci hardshell case. As with any pre-owned instrument, we’re happy to send detailed close-up photos or answer specific questions before you buy — just reach out.
Electronics, Sound & Feel
A single Aguilar AG 4P-HOT split-coil sits in the sweet spot. It’s the over-wound version of Aguilar’s 4P-60, with larger 6 mm pole pieces — hotter output, thick lows, and a growly midrange that still keeps every bit of the dynamics in your right hand. On a fretless, that midrange is gold: it’s where the mwah lives.
Wiring is passive and refreshingly simple — Volume and Tone, nothing in the way. Roll the tone back and the Amrita does a convincing old-school P-bass thump; open it up and the woodworm body and ebony board bring out an airy, detailed top that’s all its own. It’s a remarkably versatile voice for such a focused setup.
Who’s it for? A player who wants something genuinely rare under their hands — a fretless that’s warm and vocal but never woolly, light on the shoulder, and built by one of the most original luthiers working today. There are only 40 Amritas in the world, and fretless examples are rarer still. If that’s your kind of instrument, this is the conversation.
