California Soul, German Precision

A clean pre-owned Sandberg California TT4 in classic High Gloss 3-Tone Sunburst. German-built, all-passive, and exactly the kind of J-style instrument you reach for when you want jazz-bass vocabulary with the build quality only Braunschweig delivers. Excellent condition throughout, original Sandberg gigbag included.

Brand & Heritage

Sandberg has been building basses by hand in Braunschweig, Germany since 1986, and the California is the heart of their lineup – their take on the classic 60s J-bass formula, refined for modern players who don’t want to compromise on playability. Every California rolls out of the Braunschweig workshop with the same fit and finish that defines Sandberg’s reputation in the bass world.

Body & Woods

The alder body is the foundation here. Alder gives you that warm, balanced, slightly scooped midrange that defined the original Jazz Bass tonal blueprint, with plenty of bloom in the lows and a touch of growl in the upper mids. It’s the wood that made the J-bass voice famous for a reason. On a TT4 it translates to a deep, woody fundamental that sits perfectly under anything else in the band. The High Gloss 3-Tone Sunburst is the classic option, and you can see the alder breathing through the burst – the polished gloss finish lets the body speak with a little extra brightness.

The Pau Ferro fingerboard is what makes this TT4 sit a little tighter than a vintage Fender J. Pau Ferro has a quicker note attack and more articulate top end than rosewood, while keeping the warmth that maple lacks. Notes speak with more definition, particularly in the low end. Paired with the maple neck and Sandberg’s German fret work, the result is a J-bass that feels familiar but responds with the speed and clarity you want when the music asks for it.

Electronics & Controls

Two Sandberg J-style single coils in the classic 60s/70s positions, passive electronics, and the standard three-knob layout: Master Volume, Pickup Balance, and Tone. Roll the balance toward the neck for a thick, woolly fundamental that fills out a mix. Open both pickups for that scooped, hi-fi tone that does the soloed-out jazz lines so well. Favor the bridge for the nasal, punchy growl that turns the bass into something almost percussive. With passive electronics there’s nothing between your fingers and the strings – the bass tracks your dynamics directly, the way any J-bass player knows it should.

Sound & Feel

This is a J-bass for players who want J-bass vocabulary, but want it to behave perfectly across the whole neck. Sandberg’s German construction is precise – fret leveling is dead-on, the neck is fast, and the chrome hardware is solid throughout. The TT4 is going to feel immediately familiar to anyone who’s spent time with a Fender Jazz, but tighter, faster, and more articulate. Excellent for fingerstyle, jazz, fusion, soul, R&B, anything where you want the bass to speak clearly without an active preamp coloring the signal.

Condition

Excellent overall. No buckle rash on the back, hardware is clean, neck is straight, and the High Gloss finish has the depth of a recent build. Plays and looks the part. Comes with the original Sandberg gigbag.
