Sandberg Black Forty Eight
There’s no subtle way to put it – the Sandberg Forty Eight is a statement. This is a bass that walks on stage and demands attention before you play a single note. Black high gloss with cream binding, an Explorer-meets-Thunderbird silhouette, and a pair of Sandberg’s most aggressive pickups. If you’re tired of blending in, start here.
Born from a Collaboration
The Forty Eight was born from a collaboration between Sandberg founder Holger Stonjek and Marc Najjar from Chicago Music Exchange. The brief was simple: take the visual attitude of Gibson’s classic ’50s and ’60s designs and fix everything that made them frustrating to actually play. Neck dive, poor upper-fret access, inconsistent build quality – all the things that made vintage Thunderbirds as infuriating as they were cool. Sandberg took that blueprint back to their workshop in Braunschweig, Germany and built something that looks just as rebellious but plays like a proper modern instrument.
Alder and Rosewood - A Powerful Combination
The alder body delivers the balanced, full-range foundation that’s made it the go-to tone wood for decades. There’s a natural sweetness in the midrange that keeps things musical even when you’re pushing hard, and the low end is solid without being overbearing. Alder doesn’t color the sound too aggressively in any direction – it lets the pickups and the player define the character.
The rosewood fretboard adds warmth and depth to the overall voice. Rosewood naturally rounds off the high end and softens the attack just enough to keep things musical, even when you’re digging in hard. It’s a classic pairing with alder – the body provides a balanced, clear foundation and the fretboard adds that rich, woody character on top. The result is a bass that can growl and bark with attitude, but never sounds harsh or brittle. On a bass with this much visual aggression, that musicality in the tone is a welcome balance.
The Canadian Hard Rock maple neck is bolted on with six bolts for maximum stability and sustain. Sandberg uses the same neck profile and construction across the California and Forty Eight series, so if you’ve played any Sandberg, you know how good this feels – slim, fast, and utterly consistent from the first fret to the twenty-second.
Pickups That Hit Hard
Under those metal covers sit a Sandberg reverse split-coil in the neck position and a Sandberg Power Humbucker at the bridge. The split-coil is mounted in reverse orientation – the lower strings get their poles closer to the bridge for a tighter, more defined bottom end, while the higher strings get a fuller, rounder voice closer to the neck. It’s the same clever design found in Sandberg’s California VM series, and it solves the muddy-B-string problem that plagues so many basses.
The Power Humbucker at the bridge is pure aggression. Solo it and you get a barky, growling midrange that’s perfect for cutting through a loud band mix. Blend both pickups together and you land on a focused, slightly scooped tone with serious punch.
The Sandberg 2-band EQ preamp gives you active tone shaping with boost and cut on bass and treble. Pull up the volume knob and you’re in passive mode – instant vintage warmth with the treble knob functioning as a traditional tone control. It’s a deceptively versatile setup that covers everything from old-school thump to modern, hi-fi clarity.
Built to Play, Built to Last
Despite its aggressive looks, the Forty Eight balances remarkably well. Sandberg solved the neck dive problem that plagued the vintage designs it draws from – the lightweight aluminium tuners, redesigned body contours, and deeper neck pocket work together to keep this bass stable whether you’re standing or sitting. The cream binding along the body edges and headstock adds a touch of class to the rock-and-roll attitude, and the black high gloss finish is deep and flawless.
This is a bass for players who want to stand out. If you’re fronting a rock band, playing in a metal act, or just want an instrument that refuses to be ignored, the Forty Eight delivers – both visually and sonically. Handmade in Germany with the kind of build quality and attention to detail that Sandberg is known for.
