California VM 4 Cream Hardcore Aged

A brand new bass that looks like it’s survived two decades of touring – and plays like it’s been broken in by someone who knew exactly what they were doing. The Sandberg California VM4 in Cream Hardcore Aged is the four-string version of one of the most popular modern bass platforms in Europe, and this particular configuration nails the balance between vintage attitude and modern performance.

Handmade in Braunschweig

Sandberg has been building basses by hand in Braunschweig, Germany since 1986, and the California VM is the model that put them on the map. It’s a design that takes the classic offset bass template and rethinks every detail – the body contours, the neck pocket depth, the pickup placement, the hardware – all refined through decades of feedback from working musicians. The Hardcore Aged finish is Sandberg’s signature relic treatment, designed to give the instrument a look of having spent years on the road. The cream finish shows deliberate wear through to the wood beneath, the tortoiseshell pickguard has been aged to match, and the hardware carries a convincing patina. It’s not just cosmetic – the sanded neck finish means zero lacquer grab, and the whole bass feels immediately familiar in your hands.

The bass comes with Sandberg’s own split coil and power humbucker which blend perfectly together and creates a good balanced tone for the instrument.

Alder and Pau Ferro – A Balanced Voice

The alder body delivers the full, balanced tone that’s made it the go-to choice for this style of bass for decades. There’s a natural sweetness in the midrange that keeps things musical regardless of genre, solid low end that fills out a mix without dominating, and enough upper-mid presence to let the bass be heard without fighting for space. It’s a wood that doesn’t impose its own character too strongly – it lets the pickups and the player do the talking.

The Pau Ferro fretboard is a smart choice that sits tonally between the brightness of maple and the warmth of rosewood. It adds a balanced, slightly woody character to the attack without pushing the sound too far in either direction. On a VM4 with this pickup configuration, that neutrality is an asset – it gives you an honest platform that responds faithfully to how you play and how you blend your pickups. The roasted maple neck adds stability and resilience against temperature and humidity changes, while the thin D-shape profile and sanded finish make it one of the fastest, most comfortable necks you’ll find at any price point.

The VM Pickup Configuration

This is where the California VM earns its reputation. A Sandberg reverse split-coil sits in the neck position, paired with a Sandberg Power Humbucker at the bridge. The split-coil is mounted in reverse orientation – the E and A strings have their poles closer to the bridge for a tighter, more focused low end, while the D and G strings get a fuller, rounder voice. It’s a simple but brilliant twist on the classic design that solves the muddy-low-end problem and delivers even, defined tone across all four strings.

The Power Humbucker at the bridge adds serious versatility. Solo it for a barky, aggressive midrange that cuts through any mix. Blend both pickups for a focused, punchy tone with a slight mid-scoop that sits perfectly in a band context. The Sandberg 2-band EQ preamp gives you active tone shaping with boost and cut on bass and treble, and pulling up the volume knob switches to passive mode – where the treble knob becomes a traditional tone control. It’s two basses in one: vintage warmth in passive, modern precision in active.

Feels Like Home

The VM4 balances beautifully on a strap. The updated California body shape with its deeper cutaway and reduced lower horn mass means less weight, better upper-fret access, and excellent balance whether standing or sitting. The 34″ scale feels standard and familiar, the zero fret ensures even response across open and fretted notes, and the Sandberg custom bridge with adjustable string spacing lets you dial in exactly the feel you want.

This is the bass that does everything. Studio sessions, rock gigs, jazz rehearsals, funk jams – the VM4 doesn’t care what genre you throw at it. It’s a German-made workhorse with the kind of build quality, tonal versatility, and road-ready attitude that justifies every penny. We’re proud to carry it at Bass Buddha.
