California VM5 Cream Hardcore Aged

A brand new Sandberg that looks like it’s spent two decades on the road – and plays like it was born there. The California VM5 Hardcore Aged in Cream is one of those basses that feels broken in from the moment you pick it up, with zero of the stiffness you’d expect from a new instrument.

Built in Braunschweig

Sandberg has been handcrafting basses in Braunschweig, Germany since 1986, and they’ve built a reputation for delivering genuinely high-quality instruments without the eye-watering price tags that other boutique builders demand. Every California that leaves their workshop is built by hand, inspected to exacting standards, and set up to play right out of the box. The Hardcore Aged treatment isn’t just a cosmetic trick – it’s a meticulous process that ages the body, pickguard, headstock, and hardware to look like a bass that’s been gigged hard for years. The result is an instrument with real character and zero preciousness. You won’t baby this one. You’ll play it.

Tonewood Foundation

The alder body is a proven classic for a reason. It delivers a balanced, full-range tone with a sweet midrange presence that sits naturally in a band mix. There’s enough low-end weight to fill a room, but never so much that things get boomy or undefined. Alder is the foundation of countless iconic bass tones, and it does the same heavy lifting here.

The roasted maple neck is where things get interesting. The heat treatment stabilizes the wood against humidity and temperature changes – a real advantage if you’re gigging in different venues and climates – while adding a subtle warmth to the attack. You get a fast, smooth neck that feels like it’s been played in for years, with the added bonus of knowing it’ll stay stable season after season.

The Pau Ferro fretboard is a smart choice that sits right between maple and rosewood in terms of tonal character. It doesn’t have the bright, snappy ping of maple, and it’s not as dark and warm as rosewood. What you get instead is a balanced, slightly woody voice with a touch of natural compression – a fretboard that lets the pickups and the player do the talking without coloring the sound too much in either direction. It’s the kind of detail that shows Sandberg knows what they’re doing.

The VM5 is in some ways a very classic instrument where the focus is on a beautiful round and warm sound with a lot of body to it.

The pickup configuration is where the VM5 really shows its hand. A Sandberg reverse split-coil in the neck position and a humbucker at the bridge give you a range that runs from deep, old-school P-bass thump all the way to aggressive, modern growl. The split-coil is mounted in reverse orientation – meaning the B, E, and A strings have their poles closer to the bridge for a tighter, more focused low end, while the D and G strings get a rounder, fuller sound closer to the neck. It’s a clever twist on a classic design that makes the five-string low B feel authoritative rather than flabby.

The Sandberg 2-band EQ preamp keeps things simple and musical. A push-pull on the volume knob switches between active and passive mode – pull it up for instant vintage tone, push it down and you’ve got a responsive active circuit with boost/cut on bass and treble. No menus, no complexity, just useful tone shaping that works on the fly.

Playing Feel

This is a thoroughly well-made German instrument that punches well above its price point. The neck profile is a comfortable thin D-shape that makes the 34″ five-string feel effortless, and the zero fret ensures consistent tone and action across open and fretted notes. The Hardcore Aged finish on the neck means no sticky lacquer – just smooth, fast wood under your hand.

At Bass Buddha, we appreciate builders who deliver real quality without unnecessary markup, and Sandberg is the definition of that philosophy. The California VM5 Hardcore Aged is a working musician’s bass – it looks the part, sounds massive, and it’s built to handle whatever you throw at it. Comes with Sandberg’s own gigbag and certificate of authenticity.
