Vincent Akkurat 4 Butterschnaps

Vincent Bass Guitars was founded by Johannes Pöhlmann, who runs the company together with Tobias Helmlinger out of Rupprechtstegen in southern Germany. Their philosophy is refreshingly clear: passive basses with the classic vibe we all know, refined with modern engineering that lets old-school awesomeness evolve gracefully — acoustic integrity, clear and punchy tone, fast response.

The Akkurat 4 is Vincent’s love letter to the Precision bass, and this one is dressed exactly the way a P should be: warm Butterschnaps gloss, tortoise pickguard, creme pickup covers and chrome hardware. Fifties looks on the outside — and some seriously clever German thinking under the hood.

Butterscotch, tortoise and a handwound Häussel split coil — the classic P-bass recipe, executed with German precision.

Body, Neck & Woods

The body is alder, but not just a solid slab: Vincent’s TRUE TONE comb-chambering removes carefully calculated channels of wood inside the body. The result is a bass that hangs light on the strap, responds faster to your attack and breathes with a richer, more open acoustic voice than a solid body — while keeping the punch and midrange focus that made alder the classic P-bass wood in the first place.

The neck is a single piece of light roasted maple with Vincent’s own dual truss rod, rear-mounted with a traditional skunk stripe. The roasting drives moisture out of the wood, making the neck noticeably more stable through seasonal changes and adding a slightly drier, more focused snap to the attack. The fingerboard is Katalox — a hard Mexican wood sometimes called royal ebony. It has the precision and fast response of ebony with a touch more warmth, sitting sonically somewhere between ebony and rosewood.

At 40 mm the nut is classic P-bass wide, but the flat neck profile keeps your hand close to the strings, so it feels narrower than the number suggests. The stainless steel zero fret and Vincent’s carbon string holder with integrated string guide give every open string the same voice as a fretted note — consistent tone and intonation right from the nut, across all 21 frets and the compound 7.25″–12″ radius.

Electronics, Sound & Feel

The engine is a single Häussel P-Bass split coil, handwound in Germany by Harry Häussel — one of Europe’s most respected pickup makers. It delivers exactly what a great P pickup should: thick, woody fundamentals, that percussive midrange bark, and enough clarity to keep every note defined when you dig in. Wiring is pure passive — master volume and tone, nothing between your fingers and the amp.

Vincent’s own stainless steel bridge uses a semi string-through-body design, anchoring the strings into the body for extra sustain and a tighter low end, with 20 mm spacing that fingerstyle and pick players will both feel at home on. Strung with nickel plated rounds, this bass covers everything from motown thump with the tone rolled back to modern rock grind wide open.

If you’ve been looking for the P-bass — the one that nails the classic sound and look but plays with the consistency, stability and light weight of a modern boutique build, the Akkurat 4 is where the search ends. It comes with a gig bag and tool set, and it’s ready to work.
