Groove 1200W
GRBass Groove 1200 bass amp: tubes and power
This is the Groove 1200 from GRBass. Basically, it puts a tube preamp with two 12AX7s in front of a 1200-watt power amp. In other words, you get the warmth of tubes and power for days in the same box.
Moreover, the GRBass Groove 1200 goes down to a 2.67 ohm load. For example, you can run three 8 ohm cabinets. Still, the whole head weighs only 3.7 kilos.
The GR sound, with tube character
Generally, GR is known for its Pure Sound idea: the amp should let your bass come through. The Groove series keeps that, and then adds the tone that only tubes give. As a result, the sound gets a bit rounder and richer without losing definition.
EQ and filters on the Groove 1200
First of all, there’s a 4-band EQ with low, low mid, high mid and high. In addition, both mids have a frequency switch: 220 or 820 Hz on the low mid, and 720 or 1750 Hz on the high mid. So that gives you four mid frequencies to choose from.
Also, on top of the EQ, you get Deep and Bright filters for extra punch and clarity. Likewise, there’s a Scoop switch and a Drive switch, when you want a modern scoop or a bit of dirt.
The Pure switch
Then the Pure switch on the GRBass Groove 1200 bypasses the filters and the EQ. Therefore you get a completely flat sound. Especially, that’s handy when you use an external preamp, or if you switch between very different basses on a gig.
Aux inputs and headphones
Furthermore, the Groove has two aux inputs. The front aux in goes straight to the speaker, so you can play along with music. However, the rear XLR aux in goes only to the headphone output.
Which means that you can use the Groove as a small personal mixer between your bass and the PA. Also, the headphone output has its own volume control.
Connections
Besides that, on the back you get a balanced XLR DI with pre/post EQ, a send and return for effects, and a footswitch jack. Consequently, the GRBass Groove 1200 works just as well in the studio as on stage. Besides that, there’s a mute switch and a switch for the LED fan lights.
Why we dig the GRBass Groove 1200
In short, it’s a lot of power, real tube warmth and a very flexible EQ in one head. So, what’s not to like?
