Sandberg California VS4 — Hardcore Aged Lake Placid Blue

The California VS is Sandberg’s answer to the most recorded bass sound in history — one split coil, one slab of alder, zero distractions — built in Braunschweig, Germany with the precision the classics never had. This one left the workshop in 2013 wearing Sandberg’s Hardcore Aged treatment: Lake Placid Blue worn through to bare wood across the body, aged chrome hardware and a cream guard that looks like it’s done fifty years of club gigs.

The relic job is pure theatre — underneath it, this is a modern German instrument with a straight neck, working truss rod and electronics that behave exactly as they should. And at 3.8 kg it hangs lighter than most of the originals it tips its hat to.

All the vintage swagger of a beaten-up '60s split-coil, with a neck and preamp that actually behave — this is the fun part of old-school without the maintenance bill.

Body, Neck & Woods

Alder is the classic body wood for this recipe, and for good reason — it gives you a balanced, slightly warm midrange that sits in a mix without any EQ heroics. Sandberg’s Hardcore Aged finish takes it further than most factory relics dare: big honest wear-throughs on the forearm and back, checking and dings across the top, all sealed so it feels broken-in rather than fragile.

The bolt-on maple neck carries a rosewood fingerboard — this is a 2013 build, so it’s the real thing, warm and woody under the fingers with 22 cleanly dressed frets. The satin-feel maple back and Sandberg’s flat, fast profile make it an easy neck to live on for a whole set.

Scale is the standard 34 inches, so it strings, tunes and feels exactly like the classic it’s channeling — familiar from the first note. At 3.8 kg your shoulder gets the vintage look without the vintage backache.

Condition

This bass is in really fine shape. The heavy wear you see is Sandberg’s factory Hardcore Aged treatment, not damage — that’s how it looked new in 2013, and it has been looked after since. The frets are in fine condition with plenty of life left, the neck is perfect and straight, and the truss rod works exactly as it should.

The electronics are fully functional — preamp and push/pull passive mode both quiet and working as they should. It ships in a used hardcase, so it travels as safely as it plays. We’ve been over it end to end: it’s set up, stable and ready to gig the day it lands.

Electronics, Sound & Feel

One Sandberg split coil in the sweet spot — that’s the whole story, and it’s a good one. You get the thick, punchy fundamental and midrange growl the split-coil formula is famous for, voiced by Sandberg with a bit more clarity and output than a vintage original.

The twist is Sandberg’s 2-band preamp. Run it active and the treble and bass controls turn a one-pickup bass into a surprisingly wide palette — dial in modern snap for slap or roll the top off for old-school thump. Pull up the treble knob and the bass goes fully passive, with that same knob now working as a classic tone control — so a dead battery never stops a gig.

If you’ve always wanted that battered-vintage look and the simple, room-filling split-coil sound — but you also want a bass that stays in tune, plays low and fast, and has an EQ when the room fights back — this VS4 is exactly that. At this price for a German-built Sandberg, it won’t hang on the wall long.
