VM4 Virgin White Soft Aged

The Sandberg California VM4 is the bass that built Sandberg’s reputation – and this Virgin White Soft Aged version delivers the full VM experience with just enough vintage mojo to make it feel like yours from the first note. No heavy relic, no bare wood showing through – just a gentle, tasteful aging that takes the newness off and lets you focus on playing.

Soft Aged – The Sweet Spot

Soft Aged sits in the middle of Sandberg’s finish tier – more character than High Gloss, less extreme than Hardcore Aged. The Virgin White finish shows carefully applied wear marks, slight edge rounding, and gently aged hardware that gives the bass the look of an instrument that’s been played regularly but well cared for. It’s the finish for players who want a bass with personality but don’t want to explain to everyone that it came that way.

The practical benefit of the Soft Aged treatment goes beyond looks. The neck finish is lightly sanded, which means less lacquer grab and a faster, smoother feel under your fretting hand. The hardware patina adds a warm, vintage aesthetic that photographs beautifully and looks right on any stage.

The bass comes with Sandberg’s own split coil and power humbucker which blend perfectly together and creates a good balanced tone for the instrument.

The alder body is the bedrock of the VM sound – balanced, full-range, and musically responsive across all frequencies. There’s a natural sweetness in the midrange that keeps everything musical, solid low end that fills out a mix, and enough high-end clarity to let the bass cut through without being aggressive. It’s a wood that flatters every playing style.

The Pau Ferro fretboard adds a balanced tonal character that sits between maple’s brightness and rosewood’s warmth. It brings a slightly woody quality to the attack without darkening the overall voice – an honest, neutral platform that lets the VM pickup configuration shine.

The Canadian Hard Rock maple neck with its C-shape profile is one of Sandberg’s greatest strengths. Slim, fast, and utterly comfortable, it’s the kind of neck that makes you forget about technique and just play. The six-bolt connection to the body ensures maximum sustain and stability, and the zero fret guarantees even response across open and fretted notes.

The VM4 is the bass that works everywhere. Studio sessions, pub gigs, theatre pits, function bands, rock stages – it doesn’t matter. The tonal range covers everything from vintage P-bass thump to modern, scooped hi-fi, and the Soft Aged Virgin White finish looks appropriate in any context. It’s understated enough for a jazz gig and cool enough for a rock show.

At Bass Buddha, we’ve sold more VM4s than almost any other model, and there’s a reason for that. It’s the best value in Sandberg’s lineup – German craftsmanship, professional-grade electronics. The Virgin White Soft Aged is a particularly elegant take on the platform.
